When a little girl (Violet McGraw) loses both parents in a car crash, she’s transferred to the care of her aunt (Allison Williams), who also happens to be the lead engineer on a new AI “doll.” At first, it bonds with the bereaved child and helps her heal, but as their connection deepens, M3gan gets more protective, leading to the inevitable destruction. Since the plot is predictable, it’s up to the production to make it fresh. There’s not much new, but there are moments of self-aware humor that add some levity, mostly meta wise cracks provided by the doll (a hybrid of CGI, puppetry and a real girl). Otherwise, the action or direction aren’t special and there’s virtually no suspense. (2.5 / 5)
