Megalopolis

This is Francis Ford Coppola’s self-financed passion project and he has a grand vision. Even with all its flaws, the movie isn’t that bad. There’s a useless plot (actually more a fable) of a political fight between a visionary artist (Adam Driver) and the greedy mayor (Giancarlo Esposito). The dialogue is usually useless, because it’s the spectacle that’s the film’s best feature. Coppola knows how to create grand visuals and beautiful imagery. The art direction is also sumptuous. Driver is intense, while others like Shai LaBeouf and Aubrey Plaza get to go wild. At 2:18, there’s plenty of stuff that might have been eliminated, but there’s also plenty of masterful filmmaking. 2.5 out of 5 stars (2.5 / 5)
