After 6 films in almost 3 decades, this is supposed to be the final film in the Tom Cruise series. He’s back to continue thwarting the evil AI that threatens to take over the world and destroy it. And that plot is explained ad nauseum in this film. The 2:49 length could have shaved almost an hour if there was less clarification of the issue, less dialogue about the dangers and fewer reminders that his character is the only one who can save the day. The action scenes aren’t especially impressive. As opposed to the riveting suspense of the train sequence in the last film, the big arial biplane stunt gets tiresome and is never that frightening. We know it’s real and Cruise is doing it, but it’s more to impress us with the risks than offer any real thrills. The film has a high-end, big-cinema look, a few cool locations and some dramatic moments, but there’s seldom any real excitement or tension, even in the most daring scenes. This last installment seems to spend more time praising Cruise’s character than entertaining the audience. (2 / 5) Movieland link
BTW, I saw it in one of Movieland’s two new cinemas with a wall-to-wall curved BTX screen and impressive Dolby Atmos, which puts the sound all around, including rumbling the seats.
