The title character (voiced by Auli‘i Cravalho) returns 3 years later for an adventurous journey to the lost island that divides her ocean neighbors. Along the way she ends up with her demigod friend (Dwayne Johnson). Some of my thoughts from the original film still apply:
“The story is pretty standard: full of positive empowerment for girls and culturally-appropriate references, but the beautiful animation and wondrous character design boost its visual appeal. The inevitable sidekicks…add another layer of delight. The lively pace and spunky attitude combine with beautiful animation to make this movie fresh and fun. NOTE: Stay thru the credits for one final amusement (and a sequel teaser).”
The songs in the sequel are not by Lin-Manuel Miranda and they’re still spunky. In general, there’s nothing new or surprising, but lovers of the original will find plenty to enjoy this time.
