Moon Knight

Some Marvel comics aren’t really about superheroes like the wonderfully trippy FX series Legion, which has mental issues clouding the sci-fi angle. This series is also like that. Oscar Isaac stars as 2 different characters, a result of his dissociative identity disorder. They alternate existence in the corporeal world until they inhabit it together…or do they? The fantasy elements involve powerful gods from Egyptian mythology with the titular “hero” appearing at times of danger to dispatch those around him. While the series starts confusingly (to mirror the character’s own issues), it becomes almost instantly compelling. This is largely due to Isaac’s deep, interesting performance. His flake is sweetly charming and his action side is impressively assured. As his counter, Ethan Hawke also creates a compelling presence. The intricate plotting becomes a bit overdone and the sporadic action segments are passable, this is more a high-concept mind trip than a typical superhero action adventure. (Review based on 5 of 6 one-hour episodes) 3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5)
