Mufasa: The Lion King

This “realistic” animated prequel to the classic features the titular cub, who gets lost from his pride, finds a new lion friend and goes on an adventure with their sidekicks. The most impressive aspect of this film is the dazzling look. Not only are the creatures impressively expressive, the animation fills the screen with beautiful landscapes and dazzling energy. The story itself tends to be a bit repetitive, playing heavy on the emotions, but the performances are effective under the direction of Barry Jenkins. Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner return to provide the only humor as Pumbaa and Timon. The new songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda are tuneful, but nowhere near as memorable or catchy as Elton John’s originals. While it’s an entertaining film, it’s lacking the grandeur and power of the original. BTW, I watched it in the plush new recliners in the Movieland theaters. 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)
