We follow Frances McDormand on the quest for her next Oscar. She plays a woman who’s lost her husband and home, so she travels around the country in her van. This leads her to other like-minded nomads, including simple relationships with some of them (mostly played by non-actors). McDormand is less dour than her usual characters, more lighthearted and smiling. She’s also completely captivating. Director Chloé Zhao (who’s last movie, The Rider, was my fave for 2018) continues with simple setups that manage to mine the heart of any scene. This loose narrative is more a character study set in the little-known world of continually migrating travelers.
NOTE: David Strathairn is cast and his real son Tay, plays his son. In general, if their character name matches their real name in the credits, they were NOT actors.
