If comparisons to Mid90s jump to mind, that’s prob because the director on this film, Mikey Alfred, was a co-producer on that film (my review) and they both cover the LA skater scene. Even further, one of the actors, Ryder McLaughlin, plays the lead here. His character has just graduated from high school and wants to pursue a career as a pro skater. The conflict comes from the differing expectations of his father (Vince Vaughn). There’s not really a plot, but a string of scenes between father/son or with his skate friends (including some skate footage). It’s a low-key personal drama with a young casual vibe that’s enjoyably affecting.
BTW, the skater scene in NYC is covered in Skate Kitchen, which I never reviewed but watched both seasons (HBO). The primary characters are all female and their hangs are very enjoyable…more fun that this film. (3 / 5)
