A young, headstrong American woman travels to Turkey on the eve of World War ! to deliver a truck and supplies to a remote medical mission. Her escort is the titular handsome Muslim who becomes her paramour. Predictable conflict for her affection mounts between him and the earnest doctor (Josh Hartnett). This is trying to be one of those sweeping romantic epics, but it just got the sweeping part right: spectacular locations and lovely cinematography. When it comes to story, this duo consistently sets out to do ridiculously risky things that appear heroic but defy reality. This movie lacks the passion needed to make it work, between the lovers or by the director. Despite the barely credible story, It’s competently made, but lacking any fervor. (Criterion Cinemas only)
