Even though I don’t remember much about the 1998 original, I’m pretty sure it was more upbeat. Sandra Bullock & Nicole Kidman are back playing sisters with Bullock’s character also having 2 daughters (Joey King and Maisie Williams). When one of them falls in love, it revives an ancient curse that kills anyone that the witches fall in love with. Thus begins the journey to quell the curse. The film starts on a somber note and never gets any lighter. It’s much more earnest, full of “heartfelt” emotions and never-ending discussion about their loveless plight. Even the magic elements are minimal until the climatic scenes, which aren’t remotely exciting or wondrous. The focus is much more about sisterhood and love than having any fun with their powers, which makes it pretty much a yawn. 1.5 out of 5.0 stars
