This film takes place after the first Saw movie. Jigsaw, the mastermind behind this series, is played by Tobin Bell. When the movie starts, he’s been diagnosed with terminal cancer, so he travels to Mexico for an experimental treatment. When that goes bad, he decides to punish the perps. Thus begins the series of “games” where the victims have to maim themselves to save their life. This genre has been called torture porn, because that’s basically what happens: elaborate mechanisms, gruesome agony and gory aftermath. Usually, the series gets to the point earlier. This time they decided to give Jigsaw more humanity, which means more dialogue and extra dull time. Even with the painful predicaments, this version feels stale and flat.
