Shameless stars in new roles

The actors who played the 2 oldest siblings in the Showtime hit Shameless both have series that offer them new opportunities. Emmy Rossum realized her years-long dream of playing a Hollywood icon, while Jeremy Allen White stays in Chicago to play a chef.

Angelyne Angelyne is famous for being famous. Most notably, she posted billboards around LA in the 80s promoting herself, while driving around in her pink Corvette selling merch out of her trunk. Emmy Rossum assumes the role for this series and her years of prep have paid off. Nowhere do you see anyone but the charismatic and confounding icon. The story follows her career surrounded by people who she charmed into helping her. Surprisingly, the fake “doc” never discusses her own sex life, only the teases that she put out there. It’s a fascinating piece of historical trivia and Rossum disappears into the role of this unique icon. 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)

The Bear Jeremy Allen White stars as a celebrated chef who comes back to run the family sandwich shop he inherited. While the pace in the kitchen and the series is frantic, the atmosphere is 100% negative. Almost every minute of the first ep is crammed with anger and shouting. The subsequent ones delve a bit into his character’s issues, but it’s still a downer. The only bright spot comes from the sweet, yet frustrated character created by Aye Edebiri, as the new trainee. Also, the food prep scenes are anything but appetizing. Things may get better in future shows, but the destructive energy is so toxic that it left a bad taste in my mouth.
