Meghann Fahy leaves her ailing father to find her sister (Milly Alcock), who’s in an intimate “mentorship” with an enigmatic socialite (Julianne Moore) on their exclusive island estate. From the beginning, there’s a weird vibe that makes the series either promising or disappointing. It’s actually a bit of both. The evolving relationships deepen the mysteries of the household, while things move slowly and quietly. The women all do a good job in their roles, with Moore proving especially compelling. Kevin Bacon offers his best performance as the idle husband. This drama is about the strained relationships among the sometimes interesting personalities. Showrunner Molly Smith Metzler (creator of “Maid” and worked on “Shameless” and “Orange is the New Black”) manages to set things up promisingly, offering yet another recent example of unvarnished wealth. Like so many series, this could have been tighter and better in fewer eps. The outcome is less surprising than expected and not really at all shocking, which makes sitting thru the whole thing a bit of a letdown. (5 one-hour eps) (2.5 / 5)
