Tony Hale plays the single father of 2 kids (Bianca Belle and Kue Lawrence) who haven’t dealt with their mother’s recent death. The daughter expresses her anger via violent drawings, which come to life when her sketchbook falls into a strange pond. It’s important to know that this is basically a monster movie for kids…not the cute Pixar kind, but close. These creatures all reflect the drawing style of a young person’s imagination, which makes them a bit less threatening, but still dangerous. Cody Fry’s score telegraphs every scare and is too heavy handed. Otherwise, the performances are OK and the action moves. For grownups it’s never remotely tense, but if you wanna introduce a young person to some lite horror, this will prove fun.

Stay for the credits, because there’s a QR code that leads to a cool app that allows you to bring your own monster drawing to life (see mine in the photo for this review). Keep in mind, the app requires a sign in, password, etc and does NOT animate them unless you pay extra.
