Adam Sandler goes for another serious role and he’s not bad. He plays an astronaut on a solo mission who’s concerned about his deteriorating marriage back on Earth (Carey Mulligan, always wonderful). A giant alien spider (with a mellow voice by Paul Dano) becomes his space shrink, counseling him on his personal issues. This is when the film just gets stupid. While some may find the physiological exchanges warm, it becomes ludicrous at some point, as does the whole movie. The big encounter with the mysterious magenta cloud makes things even more ridiculous and doesn’t even make for a fulfilling finale. Johan Renck, who directed all 5 eps of the chilling Chernobyl, has skillfully added an intensity that keeps it interesting, but he can’t rise above the absurdity of the whole enterprise. (1 / 5)
