Tim Key plays a bit of an eccentric who lives on a remote island in Wales. After winning the lottery, he pays his favorite musicians (Tom Basden and Carey Mulligan) to reunite for one final concert. Key and Basden co-wrote the screenplay, which is a relatively predictable story. What makes it charming is the delightful performance by Key. His off-kilter personality is a constant source of humor. Basden (who also penned the songs) does a nice job as his frustrated artist and his songs have a pleasant folk-rock vibe. As the harmonizing partner, Mulligan creates a lovely character. The small village and lovely scenery add a bit of charm. Although it’s not especially original, the film still manages to be the type of semi-quirky, heart-warming “ballad” we don’t see very often any more. (3.5 / 5)
