THE PLAY: This is comprised of scenes featuring the “Mechanicals” from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, as they prepare to stage “Pyramus and Thisbe” (along with a liberal addition of locally-written asides and adlibs).
THE PRODUCTION: A show with lots of broad physical gags and silly character shtick can only succeed with a cast that’s able to handle the demands of this style. Luckily, this ensemble brings it! The title character is full of boasts and bluster, which can be trying, but Kurt Benjamin Smith mostly manages to imbue his performance with asinine arrogance. The other actors all handle the silliness and the “bad” acting with delightful results, Erica Hughes and Mitchell Ashe providing the comic highlights. Director James Ricks has peppered the show with contemporary songs (even a nod to Hamilton) with Levi Meerovich’s accordion version of a big hit (no spoilers) being especially hilarious. Ricks has also added clever bits and allowed the actors asides, which ramps up the comedy. Cora Delbridge’s costumes are an eclectic assemblage of brightly colored outfits. Running time: 1:20
THE POINT: Broad comedy can be a challenge, but this accomplished ensemble makes it fun with lively energy and clever characters. (4 / 5)
