Nathan Fiedler is a “comic” known for his awkward personality. This latest effort was created by him and Benny Safdie, an actor who also directs unconventional films with his brother like Uncut Gems (my review). Fiedler cast himself as husband to Emma Stone and they play a couple trying to promote zero emissions living on a TV show. Much of the series revolves around shooting that show (with Safdie playing their director), while the other half delves into their personal life. All of this takes place at a naturalistic slooow pace with plenty of awkward moments. Stone’s performance is nuanced and interesting, while Fiedler embodies his inept persona and Safdie goes for a slacker vibe. Unless you appreciate cringe comedy you won’t find it funny (Fiedler’s small penis is an unusual running gag without any payoff). The trio is continually in uncomfortable situations, but it feels self-consciously self-involved. The final episode takes a surreal turn that doesn’t make suffering thru 10 hours of excruciating drama worth the effort. (1.5 / 5)
