This is the 4th film from the team of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse) and it continues their style of wildly creative and fully fun animation. A family goes on a road trip to take the daughter to college, when the planet is invaded by robots intent on eliminating humans. One thing that makes animated films successful is the characters and this one features several enjoyable creations, including a cute pug and 2 dumb robots. The visuals keep the eyes entertained, while the break-neck pacing assures things never lag. Yes, there are a few sweet moments to give it heart. While this is obviously aimed at kids, there’s plenty for parents to enjoy in this energetic and imaginative adventure. NOTE: In a notable step for animation, I read that the daughter is gay, because her mom asks her “Are you and Jade official?” (4 / 5)
