The Narrow Road to the Deep North

Jacob Elordi plays a young Australian doctor who witnesses the horrible treatment of POWs building the Burma Railway in WWII Japan. When the series flashes forward to the present day, Ciarán Hinds takes over the role, where he’s still dealing with the memories of the atrocities, as well as a young love affair. The performances by Elordi and Hinds give the character plenty of power to deal with their traumas. However, every scene is extended longer than necessary, whether it’s the intimate love moments or the horrible treatment of the soldiers. The beating in Ep 4 was one of the most brutal and grueling scenes I’ve ever witnessed (and I’ve got a high threshold). There’s a compelling story at the core of this show and along with the performances, director Justin Kurzel has created a powerful drama that’s somewhat diluted by the endless slow, long scenes. (Five 45-minute eps) 3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5)
