Robert Eggers has established himself as a director with a unique vision, who’s capable of creating compelling cinematic experiences. His previous 2 films were The Witch (my review) and The Lighthouse (my review). This time he goes epic in the story of a Viking prince (Alexander SkarsgĂ„rd going all in). After his uncle kills his father (Ethan Hawke) and kidnaps his mother (Nicole Kidman), he sets out on a painful quest for revenge. This is a dark, dramatic adventure with hallucinatory visuals (it is a legend after all) and violent outbursts (although it’s often more implied than gory). Eggers has created a savage world with magical elements and cruel brutality that’s always bleakly fascinating and sometimes more. (4.5 / 5)
