The Pink Unicorn

THE PLAY: A mother in a small Texas town is challenged to accept her genderqueer teenager, while also dealing with the community’s reactions.

THE PRODUCTION: This one-woman show features Marie Lucas, a VCU grad who’s recently returned to Richmond. She keeps the audience charmed with her friendly down-home delivery and sharp timing. When the inevitable serious moments occur, they lacked a real emotional punch, but that’s partly the script. The set by Dasia Gregg & Michael Riley starts as 3 black walls with a few white squares. Lucas chalks hand-drawn illustrations to add visual interest to her story. This was a concept from director Raja Banz, who expanded the scope of the production with the drawings, as well as active staging. The light design by Austin Harber often changes colors, including pink and blue at one point during the gender discussion. The 2 brief video projections weren’t clearly edited and proved more distracting than helpful. Running time: 1:25 (no intermission)

THE POINT: Marie Lucas captures her character with aplomb, humor and sensitivity, while capturing the audience with her friendly, appealing performance.
