The Residence

The Chief Usher of the White House (Giancarlo Esposito) is murdered during a state dinner. Enter a wildly eccentric detective (Uzo Abuda) to lock down all of the guests for an all-nite investigation. This comedy mystery is from the world of Shonda Rhimes and created by Paul William Davies, who has penned the smart dialogue with occasionally clever quips. From the incredible opening “tour” of the mansion, which spans three floors, you get a taste of the scale of this sprawling inquiry, in size and cast. Abuda takes the lead with unconventional authority and magnetic comic presence (she’s also obsessed with birds). Other cast members who create amusing characters include FBI agents played by Randall Park (continually-belittled) and Dan Pererault (a frustrated fan of guests Hugh Jackman & Kylie Minogue). For more fun, toss in Al Franken, ironically cast as a Senator, and Jane Curtin, as the grouchy mother-in-law. Keeping with Shondaland’s DEI stance, the president is gay! The plot continually winds thru various suspects with snappy editing to make it less confusing and more manic. This helps because the series is very talky, so the quick pace keeps it moving. Even so, things feel drawn out at times and the final episode explanation seems interminable. The delightful casting is the show’s best asset (plus that spectacular set). 8 one-hour episodes3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5) Netflix link
