This story takes place in fantasy kingdom where the sea is full of terrifying beasts and monster hunters (looking a lot like pirates) who set out to capture them. A young enthusiast escapes her “home for girls,” befriends one of these hunters and the adventure begins. While the plot harkens back to classic buccaneer tales, the message is modern (animal cruelty, greed). The characters are sufficiently charming, but it’s the visuals that make the biggest impression. The art direction is full of colorful fantasy, while the animation is remarkably rich. This movie doesn’t break new ground (or water), but it’s a solid addition to the family film genre.
