The Shrouds

Vincent Cassel plays a grieving widower and entrepreneur. He combines his skills to create a shroud that allows him and other bereaved to watch the decaying bodies of their loved ones via an app. Diane Kruger is cast as his dead wife, her sister and his avatar, all of whom add to the story’s confusion. Fantasies alternate between his lingering longing and his exploration of a mysterious element in her buried body. His grief plays out in contrast to his relationship with her sister and the weird conspiracy plot. Basically, this is a continuous stream of dialogue, much of which is unfocused and unclear. Writer/director David Cronenberg has shot the film in a dark, attractive style, but his wandering narrative and moody pacing drag down the film. I kept waiting for a big revelation to make it all coalesce, but that never happened. Just more obtuse chatter about grief and paranoia. 1 out of 5 stars (1 / 5)
