Seth Rogen and his longtime partner Evan Goldberg created this series that looks at Hollywood thru a fictional studio’s perspective. Rogen plays the newly appointed studio head, who grapples with numerous problems, mostly revolving around art vs commerce. The individual scenes are shot in one continuous take, which adds more frantic energy to the dialogue (Ep 2 was shot entirely in one take). There are numerous other characters who add their own neurotic personalities, including Ike Barinholtz, Kathryn Hahn and Catherine O’Hara (who sadly disappears after a few eps),. To add some sort of verisimilitude, real Hollywood notables are peppered throughout, including Martin Scorcesse in a hilarious final scene, Ron Howard playing against his nice-guy type and more. Each episode focuses on a different aspect of the filmmaking process with plenty of industry in-jokes. There’s an occasional laugh, but it’s more sardonic jabs that provides the amusement. Ultimately, it’s lots of fun watching Hollywood lampooned from several angles with this sharp and incisive satire. (Review based on 7 our of 10 eps). (4 / 5)
