The Substance

Demi Moore plays a popular star who’s hosting an exercise show on TV. When the studio head (a smarmy Dennis Quaid)) calls her age into question, she discovers the process that will create a younger second version of her (Margaret Qualley). The major catch: only one of them can exist at a time and they must alternate weekly. Of course, things goes horribly wrong, which leads to a gory mess (literally). Moore and Qualley are both strong in the roles, but it’s French director Coralie Fargeat’s vision that’s the outstanding aspect. It’s beautifully shot, art directed and creatively staged. There are inevitable comparisons to David Cronenberg, primarily because of the intense focus on body horror and this could be one of his films. The flaw is the 2:20 running time, which definitely could have been trimmed. Even so, this is a grotesque, brutal and somewhat demented exploration of our ruthless beauty standards and the horrible consequences that can arise. 3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5)
