This Western takes place around the turn of the century, when life in Texas was still pretty lawless. A young man (Levon Hawke) hires a bounty hunter (Peter Dinklage) to help recover his sister from a rough-hewn outlaw (Juliette Lewis). Of course, any film with Dinklage will benefit from his presence and skill. Toss in Lewis, who’s relishing playing this creepy soul, and you have the basis for a compelling cast. While this movie sticks to a relatively predictable narrative, it’s the performances and Elliott Lester’s assured direction that keeps it interesting. The film also attractively shot by Guillermo Garza. Westerns aren’t esp popular right now, but this relatively simple indie proves sufficiently well made and involving. (3 / 5)
