Two docs about very different women

These 2 documentaries recently dropped on streaming. They both examine the lives of a famous woman.

Barbara Walters: Tell Me Everything
Waters started her TV career in the 60s, when she was the only woman in a man’s world. Despite her success, she spent much of her career in the same challenging environment. Director Jackie Jesko chose to let Walters do much of her own talking, so most of the narration is from previous interviews. There are others who talk on camera, but Walters’ voice provides most of the details. Even though her rise was continuous and impressive, she was still plagued by personal issues, which are also covered. There are no real surprises in the story, but her continued pluck and resourcefulness not only changed the definition of “news” interviews, but served as an inspiration for numerous women who followed. This doc does a good job of explaining why. 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5) Hulu link

My Mom Jayne
Jayne Mansfield was the epitome of the buxom blond, while being more trashy than Marilyn. Turns out that Mariska Hargitay, best known for her 25+ years starring on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” discovered that she was Mansfield’s daughter. Since she was very young with her mother died, Hargitay sets out to discover more about her past. This primarily takes place as she interviews her siblings and other family members, resulting in some awkward and sometimes painful recollections. They also provide the historical perspective of Mansfield’s uneven career and troubled personal life. As Hargitay’s research continues, she uncovers additional secrets that open up more revelations about her family. As such, this is as much about her journey as it is about her famous mother. It provides a fascinating look at this complex “sex symbol,” while allowing Hargitay to address her own issues. 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5) Max link
