Two good one-word mystery thrillers

Both of these thrillers involve a mystery to be solved.

Drop
Meghann Fahy plays a mom who ventures out on her first date since becoming single. Almost as soon as she’s seated with her companion (Brandon Sklenar), she starts getting anonymous phone messages threatening her if she doesn’t do increasingly horrible things. Almost the entire film plays out in the restaurant, while she tries to discover the culprit and avoid calamity. It creates an increasingly befuddling mystery that ultimately ends up in a tense frantic dash to save the day. It also pushes credibility by this point. Even so, it’s a compelling mystery that provides some enjoyable thrills along the way. 3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5)

Brick
A couple wakes up one morning to discover that the windows and doors of their apartment are blocked by a wall of baffling bricks. They end up discovering others in the building with the same predicament and work hard to escape what may otherwise be an eventual slow death. This German import adds the personalities of the neighbors to create some extra conflict, but it sometimes slows the pace and other times affects the tension. Even so, it’s a fascinating sci-fi mystery with a pretty cool ending. 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)
