Two murder mysteries

Here’s a look at 2 streaming murder mysteries. The comic one launched in August, while the British import is a current Netflix top selection.

Only Murders in the Building Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez play residents of an upscale apartment building in NYC’s Upper West Side. Although they’re strangers, they join together as amateur sleuths to solve a recent homicide, which evolves into a podcast. With the combo of Martin and Short, you can expect funny moments, with Short going all out. Gomez provides a younger perspective, but little comic assistance. The mystery unfolds with expected twists (and flashbacks) and a few fun supporting characters (no spoilers here). As the series progresses, the humor becomes less prevelant, but there’s still plenty to amuse and entertain. NOTE: Look for Fran Lebowitz in the opening monologue, flipping Martin the bird. (Ten 30-minute episodes with a second already announced) 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Stay Close This British crime series is based on a novel by Harlen Coben. It revolves around a woman (Cush Jumbo) who has a lovely family life. When someone from her past resurfaces, it causes her much concern, which deepens the mystery. A series of missing men ramps up the crime element, which is pursued by a local cop (James Nesbitt). As procedural dramas go, this one has all the usual elements unfolded with typically-British style, not frantic, tense or violent, but certainly sufficiently mysterious to maintain involvement. NOTE: Fun to see comic Eddie Izzard in a dramatic role.  (Review based on the first 4 of eight one-hour episodes) UPDATE: I finished the series and it gets more suspenseful in every episode. 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)
