Untamed

The opening scene with climbers scaling El Capitan launches this series with a riveting sequence. There are a few other tense moments sprinkled thru the show, but they become less impressive as it progresses. Eric Bana plays an investigator at Yosemite (actually shot in Canada). After a woman is found dead, he and his new assistant from LA (Lily Santiago) start working the case. This series is basically a traditional cop procedural in a beautiful natural setting. Bana’s character is given two flaws (neither one original) and subsequently plays the role grave and grim. Santiago manages to add a lively personality, even though she’s also given a personal burden to overcome. These individual issues add more formula drama. The origins of the mystery aren’t especially original and by the last episode, the credibility starts to wane. Ultimately, this is a high-end cop series set in a beautiful location (considering recent budget cuts, this well-staffed National Park is sadly ironic). 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)
