B. J. Novak wrote, directed and stars as a New York podcaster who travels to Texas when a former girlfriend dies. He befriends her family and turns his show into a murder mystery. Basically, this is a fish-out-of-water concept: He’s has a smug NYC attitude, but they’re basically genuine folks with a Texas edge. There are a number of genuinely funny moments and clever lines surrounded by messages about today’s culture (which actually bogs down the final few minutes). It’s nice to see Ashton Kutcher and John Mayer in roles, plus Issa Rae’s manager adds to the comedy. Novak has done a commendable job on all 3 of his responsibilities, creating a truly engaging comedy.
Ironic twist: Even though they make a big deal about this being in Texas, it was actually shot in New Mexico (those tax incentives). (4 / 5)
