How To with John Wilson (review)

I’m not a big fan of documentaries (which is weird considering I made one on Dirtwoman), but this is more a series of witty comic observations. Each episode has a topic that forms the framework, but Wilson readily allows other random subjects to slip into the mix. He shoots the show himself, often grabbing surprising shots around New York City. He also narrates in a hesitant, um-filled regular-guy style. What makes the show so much fun is his witty reflections and continuously clever visual puns. The final show takes the series in a poignant direction that becomes a quietly powerful chronicle of our current situation. Interestingly, the thumbnail on this review features the filmmaker, who never appears in the actual series (except occasionally in the mirror). (Six 25-minute episodes with a 2nd season already announced)
