This is the first streaming series for Robert De Niro, who plays a former US President called back to duty after terrorist attack cuts the country’s power and communications. This is undeniably his show. He’s in the majority of the scenes, often with lofty speeches. Of course, he’s up to it and he’s surrounded by an equally excellent cast, including Jesse Plemons, Lizzy Caplan, Connie Britton, Joan Allen, Matthew Modine, Angela Bassett and Dan Stevens. Yes, this is yet another hacking thriller with subterfuge and challenges thrown in the path of finding the truth. There’s not much action, because this is more about political maneuvers and their consequences. Keep in mind that this is science fiction…there is a Black woman as President, after all! The series doesn’t bring anything new to this tired trope, but the earnest performances are the main reason to watch.
