Allied (review)

A Canadian intelligence officer (Brad Pitt) joins a French Resistance fighter (Marion Cotillard) on a mission in 1942 Morocco. They fall in love, get married and move back to London, where he gets news that dramatically changes their relationship. Pitt’s performance is as flat as expected, while Cotillard creates a nuanced and compelling character. All of the right plot points are in this interesting premise, but director Robert Zemeckis has chosen to play it with a low-key style that never creates any apprehension. Even worse, the pace is deadly sloooow, further draining any potential for tension or passion. At least the period setting is beautifully realized without calling attention to itself.
