Kyle Mooney is best known for his peculiar videos on SNL. Now, he’s starring in his own peculiar movie as a man who discovers the real world after 25 years of pleasurable captivity. His obsession with a children’s TV character carries over into his new life and the comedy is supposed to come from the gentle fish out of water tropes. Although occasionally mildly amusing, most of the comedy is simply stupid. To make matters dumber, the logic of this reality is flawed from the beginning and the continued absurdities strain credibility. To make matters worse, the attempts at sweet charms are equally bland. This project feels custom made for Charlie Kaufman, but first-time feature director Dave McCary (and director of video segments for SNL) can’t master the deadpan humor that’s needed to pull it off.
