The Secrets We Keep (review)

Noomi Rapace plays a Romanian who married an American doctor (Chris Messina) during World War II. Their quiet suburban life back in the US is disrupted when she believes that a new man in town (Joel Kinnaman) is a war criminal. She kidnaps him, which begins a tulmultuous  interplay of her trying to elicit a confession, while coping with her husband’s doubts. (Yes, reminiscent of Death and the Maiden, but not as compelling). Rapace is sullen and haunted throughout and the rest of the cast is fine. While there are plenty of opportunities for powerful dramatic moments, the encounters seldom elicit that response. It unfolds interestingly, but never achieves the potential power that the concept should inspire.
