1 OK comedy & 1 lousy espionage show

Two new shows have very different approaches. One is a new series billed as a comedy for Hulu, while the other takes its legacy from a hit movie.

Unprisoned Kerry Washington plays a single mom whos dad (Delroy Lindo) gets out of many years in prison and moves in with her and her teen son (Faly Rakotohavana). There’s innate potential for comedy, but this series opts for of heartwarming instead. Washington uses her charms to keep it lighthearted and Lindo has some fine fun moments. It’s a sweet story of family conflict with some racial commentary, but instead of laugh-out-loud moments, it’s got an appealing energy. (Review based on 4 out of 8 episodes). 2.5 out of 5 stars (2.5 / 5)

True Lies This ABC series is based on the James Cameron’s 1994 movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as a secret spy and Jamie Lee Curtis as the hapless wife who gets sucked into his dangerous world. For this series the husband is played by Steve Howey (looking totally diff from his best-known character, the dumb hunk on Shameless) and his wife is Ginger Gonzaga. While the movie was cool and fun, this series tries to cram all of the espionage gimmicks, action and comedy into each ep. Every week, they gamely deter a new world-threat, but the ease of their operations soon becomes hokey and the series feels like TV at its most derisive and disappointing. 1.5 out of 5 stars (1.5 / 5)
