2 extreme action flix

Action flix keep getting more impressive with their hi-speed fights and incredible stunts. Both of these films score high for action.

Carter Joo Won plays a man who wakes up to find his memory erased. He finds himself inthe middle of a conflict between North & South Korea as a zombie-adjacent virus spreads, but it’s really all about the filmmaking. This is shot as if the whole thing was one take with dizzying drone camerawork taking the viewer under, over and around all manner of moving objects. The dialogue just serves to flesh out the peril and pass the time between the absolutely insane action scenes. Sure, they often defy physics and Won never gets hurt, but the spectacular staging is over-the-top, visceral and sometimes spectacular. On a technical front, the switch between drone movement and regular camera is sometimes jarring and there are some obvious CGI efx. Abandon logic and marvel at the wild ride that’s more like a video game than reality. NOTE: The cliff-hanger ending certainly leaves it open for a sequel. 4.5 out of 5 stars (4.5 / 5)

Day Shift Jamie Foxx stars as a pool cleaner, who’s really a vampire hunter. From his first encounter it’s obvious that these are virulent, acrobatic bloodsuckers who put up violent resistance. The action scenes are full of incredible and imaginative fights (some of which were CGI). Foxx handles the bits of comedy well, while Dave Franco adds more fun as the hapless newbie. This isn’t exceptionally funny, but the film does have a rambunctious energy that keeps it enjoyable during the times between the skirmishes. 3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5)
