2 Italian fantasies

These Italian imports approach fantasy in very different ways.

The Man Without Gravity In an early scene, the baby is born and gently floats up to the ceiling. The narrative follows him as a young boy (when he’s limited in his contact with the outside world) to his adulthood (when he must address his unique ability). While there’s potential for comedy or a wild success story, this is more a serious look into the character and how his ability affects his life. It develops too slowly and the story sometimes seems misguided, but the eventual outcome provides a quietly-observed personal drama. (Italian dubbed in English) 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)

Pinnochio Anyone familiar with Disney’s animated version is in for numerous surprises. First, it’s all live action. Even the titular character and most of the other non-humans are covered in prosthetics, sometimes to creepy effect. Roberto Benigni plays Geppetto in his typically-broad style. As a matter of fact, the movie is set in a storybook reality, which is to say fantastical, overstated and sometimes downright bizarre. The cinematography is often gorgeous and the pacing, although some scenes go on too long, manages to make the extended story manageable. Some of the creatures and encounters might be too weird for younger kids, because this is truly a bizarre trip. (The English dubbing is equally stylized) 2.5 out of 5 stars (2.5 / 5)
