2 comedy specials (one gets 5 stars)

These 2 comedy shows were recently released. One features an incredible lineup of queer comics, while the other only revolves around 2 (1 of whom is also gay).

Stand Out Earlier this year Netflix held a big comedy festival and created a bunch of specials. This one spotlights the incredible night when almost every queer comic you can name is on stage (notable exception was Ellen DeGeneres). The best part is that each person only has around 5 minutes, so they’re bringing their best stuff. Consider this lineup of some of the most notable stars: Wanda Sykes, Rosie O’Donnell, Billy Eichner, Margaret Cho, Tig Notaro and Eddie Izzard. There’s a bunch more and they’re all unique and funny if not downright hilarious. Even non-queer audience can enjoy this fast-moving calvacade of gay glee. 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Would it Kill You to Laugh Kate Berlant & John Early have been real long-time friends and collaborators, so they created this fake doc. They play a comic duo that was once famous, but broke up and are back on TV to reconcile. This is based around a talk show hosted by Meredith Vieira, but it cuts away to various silly sketches with the duo playing other characters. Both actors have the ability to be funny, but most of this lacks punch. It seems very improvised and self-focused, lacking almost any truly successful or even remotely funny moments. We’d be happy to laugh, but their stuff just doesn’t “kill.” 1 out of 5 stars (1 / 5)
