Three new cable/streaming dramas launched last weekend.
The Mayor of Kingstown Writer/director Taylor Sheridan has carved out a niche for edgy dramas and his venture into TV with Yellowstone is a powerfully written and directed series (my review of season 3). This revolves around a Michigan family that owns 10 prisons, which makes them so powerful and connected that their reach extends to both sides of the bars. The first 90-minute installment features Jeremy Renner and Kyle Chandler as brothers, who are working on projects that reflect their influence, while risking their power. It’s tightly written and well acted. A promising start. (This initial episode is one of those teaser deals. It’s free on Paramount, but if you want to see the rest of the series you have to subscribe to Paramount+.) (3.5 / 5)
UPDATE 2023: The 2nd season features more violence and F-bombs. The situations get heavy, but Renner’s character always seems to manage every issue. It ends with a potential next season.

Dexter New Blood After 10 years living in a secluded cabin in New York State, the serial killer who only dispatches bad people (Michael C. Hall) has started a new life. Even though things look positive, he’s still haunted by his past (and his dead sister who constantly comments). His urges continue and the outcome puts him in new peril. I’ve only seen the first of 10-episodes, so it’s not clear if it’ll be as compelling or deliciously evil as the original, but as a fan of that show, I’ll be giving it a full watch. (3.5 / 5)

Yellowjackets A girls soccer team crashes in the wilderness, where some of them survive for 17 months. The show takes up 25 years later as the shame and horror of that event erupts. The cast features the women as teens and adults (including Juliette Lewis, Melanie Lynskey and Christina Ricci), so there’s lots of back and forth in the timeline. Since the 1st episode is setting up the situations, not much was revealed, but the premise and the strong cast hold promise. (3.5 / 5)
