I’m Your Woman (review)

After the breakneck delivery required for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Rachael Brosnahan must have welcomed the lead in this film because almost every line (hers and others) is spoken with extended thoughtful pauses. After her gangster husband gets into deep trouble, she’s suddenly escorted into hiding with her baby. The first hour slowly unfolds with more mystery than answers (even later, the details of the conflict aren’t exactly clear). This might have been intentional to echo her character’s own lack of information, but it certainly strains patience. Once things do pick up in the final 30 minutes, there are a few tense moments. The performances are acceptable, but Julia Hart’s quiet, often sluggish atmosphere doesn’t provide sufficient slow burn to make the payoff worth the pace.
