Here’s a look at 2 of the most recent European imports that are trending on Netflix.

The Defeated Taylor Kitsch stars as a Brooklyn cop who’s assigned to the American sector of Berlin at the end of WWII. He’s there to help set up a police bureau with the Germans to help prosecute cases of postwar crime. Meanwhile, he’s searching for his brother, who went MIA. The most interesting aspect of this series is the depiction of life in the city that was divided into 4 sectors (each run by a different country) and the desperate things people did to survive. There are several subplots involving various people and their own issues. From a dramatic standpoint, there are multiple opportunities for emotion and effect. After the first 4 episodes, they’ve created an interesting world, but the involvement seems surface. (Eight 45-minute episodes) 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)

Post Mortem: No One Dies in Skarnes This Norwegian import revolves around a funeral home, where business is terrible (see the title for a clue). Things get weird when the owner’s daughter is found dead in a field, but comes back to life on the autopsy table. Her search for answers involves the bloody demise of several others. There’s certainly a creepy vibe throughout (plus some attempts at lighter moments with the cops), but no suspense ever develops. After viewing the first 4 episodes, I’m still waiting for it to gain some traction with thrills. (Six 40-minute episodes) 2.5 out of 5 stars (2.5 / 5)
