Two soldiers who are recovering from wounds in WWI (Christian Bale & John David Washington) become fast friends with a nurse (Margot Robbie). A few years later, back in the US, they witness a murder that sparks an investigation. This was based on the Business Plot, which was a conspiracy to overthrow President Roosevelt and replace him with a fascist. Writer/director David O. Russell has assembled an impressive cast that includes Robert De Niro, Rami Malek, Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Rock and Mike Meyers. They all handle the dialogue and situations well, but Russell’s writing meanders. Not sure what he’s trying to achieve: It this a moral/history lesson or a period/stylized mystery? It’s attractive to look at and there’s some internal energy, which is weird because it still feels oddly flat. (2.5 / 5)
