The Volcano: Rescue from Whakaari White Island (aka Whakaari) is actually a somewhat dormant volcano in New Zealand. In 2019, two groups of tourists took boats to the island for an exploration. While there, it erupted leaving panic and disaster. The majority of the story is told thru interviews with several survivors. There is a tiny bit of video shot during the catastrophe, but mostly there’s lots of recreated footage and endless shots of the smoky aftermath. Director Rory Kennedy has managed to create some emotional response from the interviews, giving the doc personal perspectives, but after the blast’s initial immediacy, the tension does slow. (3 / 5)
Fire of Love Katia and Maurice Krafft were a French couple who were obsessed with volcanoes. They roamed the world capturing spectacular footage. This doc is primarily comprised of film they shot with a few media interviews to flesh out their story. There’s not much information about their personal lives, just lots of beautiful explosive footage edited in a way that celebrates their dedication. (3.5 / 5)
