Sydney Sweeney & Glen Powell play a couple who meet cute, have a great night, then break up. When their family and friends host a destination wedding in Australia, they pretend to be back together, but the conflicts continue…until the inevitable. Romcoms are predictable and what can make one stand out is the writing or performances. In this case there are some mildly amusing supporting characters, but this is really Powell’s movie. Besides the fact that he spends at least half the film in some state of undress to show off his buff bod, his charisma, charm and comic ability make the movie worth watching and cement his place as THE new big-screen heartthrob. Sweeney is OK, but her nasal, flat, Valley-girl-adjacent voice is annoying. Otherwise, director Will Gluck has given the film a fun energy that makes it appealing. The closing song, which is sung by almost everyone in the cast, is the most original moment in the film. NOTE: This is loosely based on Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing” and there are quotes from the play showing up as murals and such.
