This road trip starts when 5 high school seniors decide to travel 500 miles from their small Oregon town to the coast. They pile in a van and take off with no plan. This vagabond film follows this group on their ragged adventure with a ragged anti-cinematic style. There’s no narrative, virtually no character development and the dialogue is mostly minimal. Basically, it’s just kids wandering aimlessly and running into a surprising number of cool outdoor parties. My picky observation: Despite this maverick approach, these kids continually use their phones without ever needing a charge. Directing duo the Ross Brothers have a style of hands-off direction that makes this feel like a random string of YouTube videos full of youthful joy and haphazard camerawork. Some young viewers may relate to the free-spirit attitude and others may consider this approach raw and innovative, but it’s been done before more effectively (Larry Clark’s KIDS from 1995 comes to mind). 1 out of 5 stars (1 / 5)
