Benedict Cumberbatch stars as the creator of a popular children’s show in the vein of Sesame Street. When his son goes missing, he decides to create a new puppet to bring him back. Sounds simple enough, but the narrative splits in numerous directions, including a subplot with a closeted cop (McKinley Belcher III). All of this extra clutter blocks any momentum that the drama might have developed. Frankly, the new puppet is an obnoxious presence that doesn’t really add much in way of fantasy or even resolution. Creative types can be quirky, but Cumberbatch creates a character who’s not likable and an addict to boot. If this series had been more focused on the central plot, it might have created some anxiety, but the shifting focus and uneven emotions made this more jumbled and less effective.
